English 310 Advanced Fiction Writing is a course that provides students with the opportunity to work on improving their fiction-writing skills.  In this course, you will read model stories, read essays of practical advice on the craft of writing, and write three short stories.  The class will rely heavily upon a student-centered workshop approach that will demand commitment and responsibility from all of us.

Course Goals

I have four main goals for this course:  1) to give you the opportunity to write three short stories, two of which will be revised through a final-draft stage; 2) to give you the opportunity to improve your ability to work effectively in a workshop setting; 3) to give you the opportunity to explore the craft of fiction writing through study and practice; and 3) to give you the opportunity to improve your ability to read fiction with a writer’s eye.
