The Psychological Assessment

For this assignment, you will administer and conduct a psychological assessment that includes an assessment interview and a test battery.

*    If you are in the School Counseling Concentration or Dual Credential Program, you will conduct a simulated psychological assessment in a role play exercise with a “troubled” high school student with career and vocational concerns.

*    If you are in the Community Counseling Concentration, you will conduct a simulated psychological assessment in a role play exercise with an adult client referred by the Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation seeking services for vocational rehabilitation following a debilitating incident.

For this assignment, you will:

*    complete an assessment interview

*    administer a battery of tests that will enable you to

*    evaluate emotional problems

*    career interests

*    provide developmentally appropriate recommendations for interventions based on the stated purpose of the assessment evaluation.

Based on an analysis of your results, you will address questions such as:

*    what can you say about this client’s mental and emotional status, and does this mental and emotional status affect their ability to be successful academically/vocationally?

*    what intervention(s) will you be able to recommend to ensure that this client has the greatest likelihood of success given the identified problems?

Your report must be typed.  It must be presented in a professional manner.  You must model your report on the example presented in class (also see Whiston, pages 102-105 and Erford, pages 167-197)).

You will be assigned to pair up with one of your classmates and will use each other as clients for this evaluation/case study.  In this case, you will conduct an assessment interview with and administer the tests to your “client” and then analyze and write-up the results in the form of an assessment report.

You will use the counseling lab (or space provided at the Arrowhead Campus) and to conduct your interview session and the computers in the lab (or Arrowhead Computer Lab) to administer your computer based tests.

In the event that there is an odd number in class, then see me for an alternative arrangement.

The purpose of this assignment is to provide you with first hand experience of psychological assessment.  This assignment is designed to provide you with the experience of administering, scoring, interpreting, and reporting a full formal assessment including a test battery.

For the purpose of this assignment, the test battery will include the following tests:

*    A clinical interview (psychosocial history)

*    Objective Personality Testing using:

*    Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (mbti)

and either:

*    16 PF

*    Taylor-Johnson Temperament Analysis – Individual Profile (T-JTA)

*    Projective Personality Testing

*    Rotter Incomplete Sentences Blank

*    Cognitive Testing

*    BASI (Basic Achievement Skills Inventory)

*    Shipley Institute of Living Scale

*    Clinical Testing

*    Beck Depression Index,

*    Beck Anxiety Index

*    Symptom Checklist (SCL-90-R)

*    Quality of Life Index (QOLI)

*    Career/Vocational Testing

*    Self-Directed Search (SDS)

As discussed in class, this is not a typical battery; rather, the composition of this battery is intended to give you exposure to several types of tests and testing applications, which include objective, projective, standardized, simple inventories, and computer administered assessment tools.  Each of the tests included in this battery will allow you to gather specific kinds of data about the client, and this data will provide you with the information necessary to create a comprehensive psychological assessment and profile of the client.

For this assignment, you will assume the role of a counselor either in a school or a clinical/agency setting.

*    School/Dual Program Students

*    Your client currently is a troubled student, a senior in high school, who was referred to you because she/he expressed concerns about educational (current difficulties with academics) career decisions (what will I do when I grow up?), and stress/emotional difficulties that are affecting school.

*    Community Mental Health Program Students

*    Your client is an adult who is on disability due to a problem (could be a physical injury or psychological) that resulted in an inability to continue in their previous employment and was referred to you for evaluation by the Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation (BVR).

*    BVR is assisting this client in re-entering the workforce. This assistance may include training, education and mental health treatment (if needed).

In an effort to assist this client, you will administer the battery outlined below.  This battery will provide you with some clinical, vocational, cognitive and personality measures which will allow you to 1) assess vocational interests, 2) assess personality characteristics, and 3) assess for possible cognitive deficits and/or learning disability, and 4) clinical issues that could impact this client in their vocational or academic endeavors.  You will meet with your client one or two times as needed to conduct a clinical interview (psychosocial history) and administer the test battery (the SDS is done via the web and you may request that the client take this from home and bring a copy of the report to you).  You will use either the counseling lab or space provided at the Arrowhead Campus for this purpose.  You will then score your tests, interpret your results and write up a psychological report of your findings and recommendations.

Administering the Battery

Although the battery can be administered in any order, it is recommended that the more time consuming tests (the personality tests) be administered first which will take approximately 30 – 40 minutes each to complete.  Next, The BASI and the Shipley/GAMA.  Finally, the SCL-90-R, QOLI, Beck Depression Inventory, and Beck Anxiety Index should be administered.  Each of these will take approximately 5 to 20 minutes to complete.  Finally, have the client take the SDS (on their own) and bring you a copy of the report (www.self-directed-search.com/).

All paper-pencil tests can be given to the client at once with instructions for each. The computer based tests may either be taken directly on the computer – preferred – (in the Arrowhead Computer Lab or the Counseling Lab) or via paper/pencil and then scored on the computer.  All tests administered in Q Local are exported in a trq file and emailed to Dr. C. for scoring.

Instruct your client to complete each test as follows:

*    Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Index, and SCL-90-R – Follow the directions on the tests.

*    Rotter Incomplete Sentences Blank – This test contains a series of partial sentences or Stems.  For each of these, read the stem and then complete the sentences based on your own thoughts, feelings and beliefs.

*    Self Directed Search – This Vocational/Interest inventory is available on the Web (www.self-directed-search.com/).  The cost of the test is $9.95 payable by credit card upon completion of the test.  Follow the directions on the web site.  This test takes approximately 15 minutes to complete and is self explanatory.

*    MBTI – This test is administered via the web as instructed in class.  You can have your client complete this test at home.

*    16PF/TJA and QOLI – These tests are administered on the computer using the Q Local system.  Using the computer either in the Arrowhead Lab or the Counseling Lab, in the Q Local program, select “On-line Entry” and select the desired test from the menu.  Then follow the directions.  For the TJA, be sure to use the Individual Profile (not the Criss-Cross).

The SCL-90-R, 16PF, TJA and the QOLI are administered as follows.

*    After starting Q Local, choose “Administer assessment on screen”.

*    Select the test from the menu.

*    Upon completion of the test, the computer will prompt the administrator (you) for a password.

*    Enter “zzz” to continue.

*    Click on Save.  Then Click Save again

*    Click Skip Verify.

Upon completion, collect any test materials and ask the client if she or he has any questions or comments about the process.  Note the approximate amount of time that the battery took.  If the client took much more or less time than would be expected, this may indicate that the client had difficulty with a test or that the client did not take the tests seriously or give them careful consideration.  Either would be worthy of note in the report.

Scoring and Interpretation

Scoring and interpretation the Beck Depression Inventory and the Beck Anxiety Index is self explanatory.

For Q Local Tests:

*    After completing all tests on Q Local, you will need to transfer them to a disk to be scored by Dr. C.

*    From the main menu, go to Score and Print Reports.

*    Holding the “Control” (Ctrl) button on your keyboard, click on each of your client’s tests on the lists of clients.

*    Click “Import and Export”

*    In the window that opens, choose the first option in the list “Transfer data in a trq file”.

*    Follow the prompts to save the file on your disk

·        Please save the file with your name and date (eg, smith_9_07)

*    Attach the file in an email to me, and I will score it for you and have it back by the next class meeting

The Rotter Incomplete Sentences Blank is a projective, non-standardized test.  Although techniques for generating a more objective score have been published, the test is typically used in its more subjective form.  Look at the way that the client responded to each item.  What does the content tell you about the client?  Are there common themes (loneliness, loss, anger, fear, happiness, love, etc.) in the responses? What is the attitude of the client in her or his responses?  Are the answers positive, negative, indifferent, simple, complex?  What do the responses suggest about the client’s relationships with others, about work life, home life, etc.?   The insights gained from the Sentence Completion Test are limited only by your imagination.  The data can tell you a great deal about the client.

Writing the Report

For the purpose of this assignment, your psychological report must follow the format of the sample supplied by the instructor.  The report should include:

*    Demographics:  Include client’s name, date of birth, gender, marital status, etc.

*    Presenting Problem (briefly described) and brief psychosocial history.

*    General Appearance/Physical Description:  How was the client dressed/groomed?  Appropriate, unusual, bazaar, unkempt, etc. as well as Height/weight, eye color, hair

*    Emotional Evaluation: Affect – normal, flat, blunted, anxious, appropriate.  Explain (i.e. describe your observations).

*    Social Evaluation: Attitude -- during interview/administration of tests, toward administrator, etc.

*    Data Gathering: Describe the methods that were used for this battery including the interview and tests used. This should include a brief explanation of each test, what it measures, what scores mean, etc.

*    Results/Findings: This is the section in which you report the results of each test.  You may describe the findings in any order you wish, but keep the results of each test separate in this section.  Include subsections for each test.  For the MBTI, report the four letter type, and then give the descriptive report for that type based on appropriate information from the manual.

*    Discussion:  This is the section where you “synthesize” results.  Here, you want to take the data you have gathered with your interview and tests and paint a picture of this client.  Are there any findings in the tests that suggest existing or potential problems or difficulties?  Are there inconstancies between tests?  Is there anything in your findings indicating problems requiring intervention?  Based on your findings, what are your recommendations for this client (not just whether or not counseling would be recommended, but also what should the client be aware of about their self that could be helpful in their self-understanding/growth especially with regard to their educational and vocational concerns)?

*    You will not make a diagnosis based on this battery.

Total assignment is worth 400 points*
